Application process

What does the application process entail?

The application process for the basehabitat Postgraduate programme consists of the following steps:
1. Submit your application: Send your application to basehabitat.postgrad@kunstuni-linz.at
Detailed instructions can be found in the download section of our website.
2. Evaluation: Your application will be reviewed by a mini- mum of two basehabitat members. Please note that applications will be evaluated immediately after submission.
3. Interview invitation: Selected applicants will receive an interview invitation by email. Interviews will be conducted via Zoom.
4. Notification: You will be notified of your application status within a week of your interview. Applicants will then be informed whether or not they have been accepted.
5. Admission and payment: Upon admission, you will receive both an acceptance letter and a payment letter. The payment letter will help you in arranging funding and will include details for submitting a non-refundable 20% deposit to secure your place.
6. Final payment: Full payment of tuition fees is required by the deadline specified in the payment letter. Your enrolment will only be confirmed once the payment is received.

What are the requirements for the portfolio?

See Application Documents pdf.

  • The size of your portfolio must not exceed 20 MB
  • The size of the pages must not exceed A4
  • The number of pages must not exceed 20 A4 size pages - The document format must be PDF and save as: NameFirstName_PORTFOLIO

Costs of the programme

Tuition fee

The tuition fee for the programme is €14.500. The entire programme comprises 90 ects.
We accept a maximum of 20 students to ensure that each student receives exceptional personal attention.

Payment

A non-refundable security deposit of €3.000 is payable immediately upon being accepted into the programme, to guarantee your place. The rest must be paid within 3 months of your application being approved.
The fee does NOT include any travel expenses, accommodation or material for studying either in Linz or on the construction site.

Costs + scholarships

What are the costs of living in Linz?

The average costs of living in Austria are approx. €700 to €900 per month.
Accommodation: €300 to €500
Food: €300
Extras: €150 to €200

What are the costs of living at the construction site?

The costs of living on the construction site are low. Simple and cheap food and accommodation are offered for the whole group.

Are there scholarships one could apply for?

Unfortunately, there are currently no scholarships available from basehabitat.
Check scholarship possibilities in your own country or consult the Austrian grants website: grants.at/en/
We have designed the course to keep the overall cost as low as possible. You only need to be in Austria for a for a maximum of 6 months. The second term is on a constructions site, where the cost of living is low. The third term is dedicated to writing the thesis and can be anywhere, even at home.

Duration + Location

Is it possible to work while studying?

The Postgraduate is compact and intensive. The course is full-time and attendance is compulsory. Students will attend lessons every day from 9:00 to 17:00. You cannot work while studying or take part-time courses.

When does the basehabitat | Postgraduate start?

Start: March 2, 2026 End: September 24, 2027

What is the duration of the programme?

The programme is a one-and-a-half-year, English-language course consisting of three full-time semesters, upon completion of which students will be awarded a Master of Arts in Continuing Education (MA CE) from the University of Arts Linz.

Is the basehabitat | Postgraduate based in Linz?

Candidates must be based in Linz for 6 months. A working place will be available at the University.
After a summer break you will go to the construction site. You can choose the place you prefer to write your Master‘s thesis.

Required qualification

Which previous degrees qualify me for the programme?

Bachelor’s degree in architecture or a related subject-relevant degree with 180 ects in combination with some years of relevant professional experience.

I hold a BA degree in Architecture, can I apply for the Postgraduate Degree?

Yes. Your Bachelor‘s Degree must have 180 ects.

Language

In which language will the classes be taught?

The programme is held in English, therefore an excellent command of spoken and written English is required (level B2, TOEFL or CAE no older than 2 years).

Visa

Do I need a visa?

Check with the Austrian embassy in your home country, if you need a visa to study in Austria. Also be aware of deadlines and how long it takes to process your visa. It is your responsibility to make sure you arrange everything on time.
basehabitat does not cover shipping costs and will not return any documents sent by post.
Furthermore, basehabitat does not cover travel or visa expenses.
