BASEhabitat International Summer School
on earthen and bamboo construction

When

July 16 - 30, 2018

Location

Altmünster, Austria

Bamboo is becoming increasingly important as a building material. Due to its static properties it offers a strong alternative to wood and steel. In 2018, various techniques were tested during the bamboo workshop, such as split and bent bamboo, connections using screws and ropes.

The participants of the Summer School 2018 built a pizza oven made of rammed earth for the NGO OSOGO (Obstsortengarten-Ohlsdorf). The NGO collects and protects old varieties of fruit and offers courses and training.

In the same way as timber construction has managed to step out of its niche and become a popular construction technique, earth can prove it’s potentials as a strong and sustainable building material in contemporary architecture. The network of experts is growing, 2018 new specialists in modern cob techiniques joined our team.
